3 Ways to Better Communicate with your Child

When we think about building healthier relationships, we don’t always consider the ones we share with our children. I’m sure I don’t have to be the one to break the news to you, but the relationship you share with your kids is very important. How your children interact with you will often determine the health of all their future relationships. Its complex and delicate and we should often check on the health of our bond to make sure we are properly adjusting as their needs change. Meeting your child’s physical, mental and emotional needs are vital to a strong, healthy relationship. But how can you meet them if they don’t properly communicate them? Here are 3 ways to improve the communication between you and your child.

Make room for meaningful conversation

Now a days everyone has their face in either a phone, tablet or television. When trying to have a meaningful conversation, make sure your child has your full attention, and make sure you have theirs. Put aside all devices and look at each other without any distractions. If the conversation is really important, consider going for a drive, walk or grabbing a bite to eat together.

Ask the right questions

I can guarantee that even on your worst day, if someone asked you how you were, you would probably automatically respond with “fine”. Our kids are no different. If you ask them how their school day was, they are probably going to skip over the details and get straight to the automatic response of “good”. Get them talking by asking questions that give you a sense of how they are feeling like “What made you smile today?” or “Who did you sit next to at lunch?”. These questions will surly lead to a little more dialogue.

Don’t over react

When you child opens up about a sensitive subject, the quickest way to guarantee that they never trust you again, is to over react! Play it cool sis. Goal number one is to gather all the important information, then you can go in your room and scream into a pillow or ask sweet baby Jesus why middle school kids are talking about performing oral sex on the bus. They need to know that they can trust you. Get the information, gather yourself then you can get a plan to properly address what they told you.

Ok Sis, dating is fun and marriage is fulfilling but please don’t forget that tiny humans need love too. Let them know that you see them, you hear them and you support them.
